David Sachs, an AI and cryptocurrency expert in the Trump administration, defended the administration’s executive order on AI, saying the United States risks losing its lead over China unless it adopts a unified national regulatory framework.
Speaking on Fox Business’ “Morning with Maria” this morning, he said the United States is ahead in the AI race, but China is still highly competitive, and American innovators could fall behind if they have to comply with a set of conflicting AI rules emerging in all 50 states.
“If you have to report to 50 different regulatory bodies 50 different times with 50 different definitions, that’s very cumbersome,” Sachs emphasized. “That will slow down innovation, and it will hinder our progress in the AI race.”
“So, if we want to stay ahead, as President Trump has announced, we need one national standard, one standard for AI, so that the toughest, toughest countries can’t stop you,” he said. “We want to work with Congress on this.”
Until a national standard is established, Sachs said the administration is prepared to push back against what it sees as overly restrictive state regulations.
Trump on Thursday signed a new executive order titled “Ensuring National AI Policy,” to confront state AI laws that change faithful model outputs, restrict innovation, or interfere with interstate commerce, while promoting a unified national AI policy.
The order is facing bipartisan backlash, with critics warning that it amplifies threats from AI-powered chatbots, surveillance tools, and systemic bias. Alarm is rising even among some conservative voices.
