Akash founder Greg Ossory said the decentralized computing project will retire its Cosmos SDK chain and move to a different network that can “secure Akash,” and begin a public evaluation of candidates inside and outside the Cosmos ecosystem.

The destination string has not been named yet. In the

Launched as the Cosmos App Chain, Akash runs a decentralized marketplace for GPU and computing power. The protocol matches AI and cloud buyers with independent providers. In 2023, the network introduced Nvidia GPUs with the Mainnet 6 upgrade, offering lower costs compared to mainframe clouds.

According to founder Akash, keeping the integrations core will keep the user’s workflow going with tools like Osmosis and Keplr. He added that a request for proposals inviting institutions to participate is scheduled to be submitted “in the coming weeks.”

Addressing users’ concerns about the staking process, Ossori added that during the staking process, “it may look like [it’s] His disappearance from Akash, he is actually evolving into something superior.

His post hinted at alternative designs beyond pure consensus security. Ossori also described Solana as a “strong contender” for Akash’s new home, while stressing that the team will be “very wise” in choosing its migration destination.

Changing the core layer is a major architectural shift for the DePIN network. Ossory’s criteria – security, liquidity and community – likely point to a broader search for scalable settlement and distribution as demand for AI computing rises. In fact, The Block’s data lists DePIN as a multi-billion-dollar asset class that includes compute, storage, and wireless networking.

Additionally, Block Research’s 2025 DePin Report highlights web3 cloud and AI computing as leading sectors. It also points to persistent hurdles such as access to devices, network scalability, and cross-border regulatory uncertainty. The study concluded that interoperability and reliable throughput will determine which networks become virtual paths for decentralized applications and real-world workloads.

Akash did not specify a timetable for migration. The process will be public and community-driven, with trade-offs discussed openly before a final decision is made, Ossori said.
