In the rapidly growing Internet of Things (IoT) industry, the proliferation of communication standards has caused fragmentation. This often complicates the process of integrating IoT devices into a cohesive network. The Chirp project is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) to improve connectivity and management of IoT devices.

Chirp: Mesh network infrastructure for IoT devices

Chirp is a mesh network for IoT devices based on LoRa and Sub-GHZ LoRaWAN wireless communications. It comes with an entire IoT ecosystem called Chirp Wireless, which is specifically designed to power decentralized sensors, robots, and other IoT devices.

Its hardware gateways, called Blackbirds, are maintained by a decentralized community of contributors, called Keepers. Blackbird devices provide network coverage for IoT devices through 2.4GHz LoRa, 2.4GHz LoRaWAN, Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Thread connections. They also form the backbone of the network topology through LoRa backhaul communications.

Support for a wide range of protocols makes the Chirp platform suitable for both residential and commercial use, and enables high-bandwidth near-field communication and long-range sparse communications.

Guardians receive CHIRP tokens as rewards for maintaining the network infrastructure. Unlike other platforms, Chirp has a single manufacturer licensed to produce nodes for its DePIN, while other networks, such as Helium, have multiple licensed manufacturers. Supply control helps Chirp keep rewards at an appropriate level and avoid network oversaturation.

Chirp Wireless allows devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other. Apart from the communication tool, it provides a dashboard and low-code platform to help IoT network administrators collect and analyze data. Using these tools, Chirp Wireless consolidates data from different sensors into one place and presents it in an easy-to-understand user interface.

The core of the ecosystem: the CHIRP token

CHIRP is the native token of the Chirp ecosystem, which is used for the core functions of the protocol as well as paying network rewards. CHIRP has three main use cases: rewarding gatekeepers, enabling access to the network and ecosystem, and managing the governance process.

To connect devices to the network, the user must choose an access format, such as a monthly subscription or a pay-per-data plan. The plans are priced in local fiat currencies, but payment is made using CHIRP tokens on the Sui blockchain.

Chirp network access system

The total supply of CHIRP is set at 300 million tokens, which will be distributed over the first 10 years after the token generation event (TGE). The token supply is allocated across four stakeholder groups and three dedicated groups managed by the team (Table 1). Each group, except for advisors and the Chirp team, receives a portion of the tokens at the token launch. 30% of the token supply is allocated to Keepers, the key stakeholders responsible for maintaining the network, with distribution pre-programmed over the first 10 years after mainnet launch.

Sherb’s outlook

Chirp has developed a comprehensive tool that can connect the fragmented world of IoT. It opens the opportunity to create IoT systems that can collect data, visualize it, and automatically take actions based on the data. Powered by a token-based economy with deflationary features, Chirp is a potential competitor to established companies in this space.

However, it is still in its early stages, with around 400 active nodes in the network and a limited number of commercial customers. Its future success depends on its ability to generate stable revenues to maintain network participation, especially from commercial users who can supply ongoing demand.
